Croom Medical, a manufacturer of medical and orthopedic devices, proudly marked its 40th anniversary in 2024. Founded on December 3rd, 1984, in the village of Croom, Co. Limerick, the family-owned company has grown from humble beginnings into a trusted global partner for leading medtech companies.
The company’s story began with Paddy Byrnes, a visionary entrepreneur who laid the foundation for Croom Medical as a precision engineering firm. Initially, the company focused on machining precision tooling for companies such as Verbatim, Paco, Dell Computers, and Howmedica Osteonics in the local Raheen Industrial Estate. Over the past four decades, the company has evolved into a leader in medical manufacturing, now under the stewardship of CEO Patrick Byrnes, the founder’s son.
Croom Medical operates an advanced manufacturing facility equipped with cutting-edge technologies, producing ultra-precision components for blue-chip multinational clients. This second-generation family-owned business has cemented its place as a key player in Ireland’s medtech sector. As the largest employer in the town of Croom, the company plays a vital role in supporting the local community.
Croom Medical has experienced significant growth in recent years. Between 2021 and 2024 its workforce more than tripled, growing from 45 employees to over 150. This expansion was supported by a €12 million investment in facilities, including the integration of high-tech equipment such as metal 3D printing, automation systems and new machining centers.
CEO Patrick Byrnes attributes the company’s success to its firm focus on innovation and quality. “Our facility hosts some of the most advanced manufacturing technologies in Europe,” Byrnes said. “This enables us to meet the increasing global demand for precision-engineered medical devices while creating high-value jobs in our local community.”
Croom Medical’s dedication to excellence has not gone unnoticed. In 2023, the company was honoured as IBEC Medtech Supplier/Partner of the Year at the Irish Medtech Awards. In addition, the Limerick Chamber Awards named Croom Medical Best Overall Business of the Year and Best SME Business: Contribution to the Region in 2021.
In 2023, the company’s R&D team achieved a major milestone by developing a titanium and tantalum-based orthopedic implant prototype. A world’s first, this hybrid implant is designed to improve patient outcomes by offering a lightweight yet durable solution.
Strategically positioned near Ireland’s medtech hub, Croom Medical continues to strengthen its global presence through collaboration with international industry leaders. Plans for further expansion are underway, with new initiatives set to be announced in 2025.
“As we look to the future, we are excited to build on our legacy of innovation and excellence,” said Patrick Byrnes. “We remain committed to expanding our footprint, creating high-value roles, and meeting the needs of our global customers while contributing to the local economy.”
