WebOps, a provider of medical device logistics solutions, has tracked an upward trend in orthopedic procedures amid the COVID-19 recovery. The company released the following graphic on orthopedic surgery volume in late May.
In WebOps’ sample of 20 countries, the impact to elective surgeries hit in the week of March 15. Orthopedic surgery cancellations doubled that week as hospitals scrambled to ensure the availability of emergency capacity. At the same time, there was a precipitous drop in the scheduling of new elective surgeries. Net orthopedic surgeries fell almost 75% in four weeks, with only trauma procedures holding relatively steady, according to WebOps.
While COVID-19 continues to spread across the globe, some countries — led by the U.S., Colombia, South Africa and Australia – saw elective orthopedic procedures trend upward through the third week in May, with the total case count almost doubling the April total, according to the company.
While orthopedic procedures were expected to resume in the second quarter of 2020, disruption to procedure volume is projected to continue throughout 2020 and into 2021.
