Orthopedic device makers and contract manufacturers are adding additive manufacturing (AM) to produce implants that offer novel designs and better bone ingrowth. The technology has the potential to improve outcomes in trauma care, sports medicine, joint replacements and spine surgery.
Recent partnerships indicate the growing importance of AM in innovative orthopedic care. Himed and Lithoz entered into a long-term strategic agreement to integrate Himed’s calcium phosphate biomaterials with Lithoz’s LithaBone product line. Tecomet, EOS, Orthopaedic Innovation Centre and Precision ADM joined forces on an end-to-end AM solution. Exactech collaborated with Materialise to increase access to personalized shoulder implants in Europe and Australia.
As AM continues to gain adoption in orthopedics, companies will focus on innovation around materials and patient-specific solutions.
