Advice on Building Resilience from Disruption

“Disruption” is a word we’ve heard a lot in the last two-plus years, not in defining radical change or advancement, of course, but in the context of interruption and total disturbance. In solely considering the pressures of today, companies are facing global supply chain chaos, inflation issues in the U.S., and a war in Europe, to name a few.

We will always face disruptions in our roles and as a team. Some might be minor. Others might feel insurmountable. How do we push through and overcome?

Three words I often hear are perseverance, endurance and resilience.

Perseverance is the continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties. Endurance is the ability to withstand hardship or adversity during a prolonged stressful effort. Resilience is the ability to recover or adjust to the misfortune or change we’ve experienced.

We dedicate part of this issue to building and maintaining resilient teams. Persevering through a challenge is one thing. Honing resilience prepares you to respond better to the challenges ahead.

Mark Freier of WhatIf Enterprises notes that resiliency does not happen by luck. It requires forming a SMART and HEALTHY culture. SMART principles are clear-cut objectives and laser-focus business practices grounded in accountability. A HEALTHY culture includes dynamics like engagement, productivity and conflict management.

While Freier outlines the practical why and how to build, maintain and lead with resiliency, we dedicate a portion of this issue to where you’ll need to flex that resiliency muscle.

We provide lessons on cross-functional communication, which is rooted in a SMART and HEALTHY culture. We give insight into what markets companies are prioritizing in response to EU MDR, which
requires SMART principles.

Finally, we offer our annual commentary on the state of the orthopedic market and the industry’s road to recovery, which will continue to test everyone’s resilience.
