In the Zone: A Toast to Time

There is so much to be said about time—why it plays with our perception, how to value it, how and with whom to spend it. It’s precious, elusive, constant, underappreciated. And it has a remarkably reflective quality.

With this issue, yes, we celebrate 20 years of BONEZONE. But more importantly, we consider what was accomplished in orthopedics in recent decades, and contemplate what will consume the industry in the years to come.

There is so much that can be said when you’re thinking of generations, in loose terms, of an industry. The people and companies that make things happen, the anticipated and unpredictable market forces, the customers, of course, and numerous other important stories could describe a period. We chose to use these pages to focus on the technology of orthopedics past and present, but mainly, future. After all, you and your companies are defined by the products you make.

We collected a wide range of voices to forecast orthopedic advancements, including dozens of tenured CEOs, young entrepreneurs (Kevin Rocco of Biorez, Jason Haider of Xenco Medical and Eugene Malinskiy of Lazurite), OEMs, suppliers and surgeons. We asked them to share thoughts on which technology will disrupt orthopedics the most, what problems are the biggest to solve, what excites them about the industry and what wise advice they can offer to the next generation.

You only have to flip a few pages in the print issue to find a striking remark that I’ve reminisced about since hearing it two years ago. Mike Mogul, currently President and Managing Director of HealthpointCapital, noted that orthopedics is at an inflection point—implants, technology, manufacturing, delivery and interconnectivity are all grounds for debate and evolution. “Sea changes are coming,” he said. “It’s a question of when and how, not if.”

We, too, believe that orthopedics is at a critical juncture for embracing technology to drive meaningful change. As you consider your role in orthopedics, we hope this issue helps you identify the what and why the future holds. Over time, say the next 20 years if you’ll have us, we’ll continue to update you on the when and how.
