ASTM Launches Personnel Certificate in Additive Manufacturing

The ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) has announced one of the industry’s first certificate programs, to be held in March 2020 at Auburn University in Alabama.

ASTM conducted a landscape analysis to understand existing gaps in AM education and workforce development, and to develop a course to fill the current gaps. The course covers all basic concepts of the AM process chain while equipping attendees with core technical knowledge related to best practices, including standardized methodologies. The course is open to anyone with interest in additive manufacturing/3D printing

Specific modules include:

  • Terminology
  • AM process overview
  • Design and simulation
  • Feedstock
  • Post-processing
  • Mechanical testing
  • Non-destructive inspection
  • Safety issues
  • Qualification/certification

Modules will be taught by globally-recognized experts from industry, regulatory agencies and academia, and participants will learn real-world scenarios currently used in industry. The course welcomes participants from government, industry and academia, as well as those with prior experience in additive manufacturing.

ASTM has helped industry build additive knowledge for several years. Initiatives include its center for excellence, a global innovation hub to advance AM technical standards, related research and development, education, training, etc. In addition, the center will serve as a consortium in attracting stakeholders from medical and various other industries that are increasingly engaged in AM applications.

Further, ASTM and testing/certification organization TÜV SÜD signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop programs aimed at speeding adoption of and trust in AM technologies. The partnership supports knowledge-sharing and the growing use of AM/3D printing across a variety of industry sectors, including healthcare.
