2021 Supplier Mergers & Acquisitions

This year saw a flurry of acquisitions and a merger as contract manufacturers and service providers sought to add to their capability portfolio. ARCH Medical, in particular, had a busy year with several acquisitions. Companies made strategic decisions based on expanding their presence in particular geographic areas as well as adding complementary services and technologies.

3D Systems Acquires Additive Works

3D Systems announced an agreement to acquire Additive Works. The Germany-based Additive Works is a software company focused on simulation-based optimization and automation of the AM print preparation and workflow. Integrating Additive Works’ simulation expertise into 3D Systems’ software team will enhance the company’s AM software portfolio and innovation capacity.

ARCH Medical Solutions Continues Acquisition Spree

ARCH Medical Solutions continued its aggressive acquisition strategy through five announcements in 2021.

ARCH acquired Tier ONE, a contract manufacturer of high-precision assemblies and other devices serving various segments in life science research, as well as medical diagnostic and laboratory equipment markets. The new location, which becomes ARCH Medical Solutions – Newtown, expands ARCH’s presence in the growing healthcare, diagnostic, and life sciences markets.

ARCH acquired Titan Medical Manufacturing, with operations in Bartlett, Tennessee and Lexington, Tennessee. Titan is a manufacturer of surgical implants, devices and instruments and engineering solutions serving the orthopedic industry. Spanning approximately 80,000 square feet, the Titan facilities support a wide range of advanced core competencies that complement the existing manufacturing capabilities at ARCH locations across the country. Titan will become ARCH – Memphis.

ARCH announced the acquisition of three VfD Technologies companies: Wilsey Tool Company, in Quakertown, Pennsylvania; Isimac Manufacturing in Blandon, Pennsylvania; and Choice Precision in Whitehall, Pennsylvania. Each company specializes in precision contract manufacturing for the medical device industry with added expertise in machining robotic end-effectors for specialty robotics and factory automation applications. The new acquisitions join ARCH collectively as ARCH Medical Solutions – Lehigh Valley.

ARCH acquired the plant and operations of LISI Medical Jeropa, a subsidiary of LISI Medical that is located in Escondido, California, in September 2021. The Jeropa plant is a contract manufacturer of high-precision medical implants, instruments and other devices serving a variety of segments, including orthopedic.

Finally, in November, ARCH Medical Solutions acquired Medical Machining Specialists (MMS). Based outside Memphis in Olive Branch, Mississippi, MMS is a full-service manufacturer of surgical instruments for the spine, orthopedic, trauma and extremity markets. The 20,000-square-foot MMS manufacturing space and its 65 employees join ARCH Medical Solutions (AMS) as a third facility at the ARCH Medical Solutions – Memphis location.

 

ARCH Medical develops orthopedic implants and instruments, navigated and robotic-assisted surgical devices, and precision components for surgical robotic systems, with locations in California, Indiana, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

Avalign Technologies Acquires Additive Manufacturing Company

Avalign Technologies, provider of coatings and manufacturer of orthopedic implants and instruments, announced in January 2021 that it had completed the acquisition of Slice Manufacturing Studios’ assets. Slice offers implants and instruments for the hip, spine and knee markets, specializing in additive and subtractive manufacturing and sterile packaging. Avalign is headquartered in Bannockburn, Illinois, and Slice is based in Akron, Ohio. Avalign is backed by Linden Capital Partners.

EPTAM Acquires Mendell, Enhances Micro-Machining Capabilities

EPTAM Precision Solutions acquired Mendell Machine and Manufacturing, a medical component manufacturer located in Lakeville, Minnesota, that specializes in precision CNC micro-machining of implantable devices for the orthopedic and other medical markets. The transaction provides a one-stop shop for orthopedic, minimally invasive surgery and robotic-assisted surgery components. EPTAM is an outsourced manufacturer of medical devices, implants, single-use medical disposable devices and other high-precision components with operations in New Hampshire, Colorado, and New Jersey. With the acquisition, EPTAM offers customers a single partner for their high-precision metals and plastics manufacturing requirements.

Marle Acquires Additive Manufacturer 3D MEDLAB

Marle Group entered an agreement to acquire France-based 3D MEDLAB. Marle Group now has seven production facilities exclusively focused on orthopedic implant manufacturing for OEMs globally. Additive manufacturer 3D MEDLAB specializes in engineering, design and development, and production of 3D-printed metal implants, polymer implants and components for the ortho, spine, trauma and cardio markets. The acquisition expands Marle’s contract manufacturing and creates a total end-to-end solution including research and innovation, product development, prototyping, various manufacturing platforms, inspection and quality, complete packaging, and delivery of complex finished products.

Mediliant Acquires Spine Focus with CTE Solutions

Mediliant acquired CTE Solutions, a contract manufacturer based in Plymouth, Indiana, that specializes in spine implants. Previously, in August 2020, Mediliant acquired MDI LLC, a contract manufacturer of extremity and trauma medical devices, located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. As a group, the company will focus on implants for spine, extremities and trauma. Mediliant’s acquisitions of both MDI and CTE Solutions are an initial step in forming an orthopedic contract manufacturing group whose members share a similar corporate culture, entrepreneurial spirit and a customer-centered approach to business.

Mo-Sci Acquired by Heraeus

Heraeus acquired Mo-Sci Corporation, provider of medical and specialty glass, and ETS Technology, provider of wound care technologies. Both companies are located in Rolla, Missouri. The acquisitions are expected to close by the end of 2021, and Heraeus plans to keep the existing Mo-Sci team and facilities in Rolla. Mo-Sci supplies the medical device industry with glass microspheres, fibers and powders. The addition of these two businesses will strengthen the Heraeus healthcare and medical technology portfolio.

Precision Coating Merging with N2 Biomedical

Precision Coating, a medical coatings service provider for orthopedic implants, announced a merger with N2 Biomedical. N2 provides nano-engineered surface treatment and coating services for implantable and other medical devices used in orthopedics with its low-temperature Ion Implantation Surface Treatments and Ion Beam Assisted Deposition technologies. With the purchase, Precision Coating can now offer engineered coating solutions across both instruments and implants in orthopedics.

Sandvik Acquires DWFritz Automation

DWFritz Automation is a global provider of precision metrology, inspection and assembly solutions for advanced manufacturing. The company designs, builds and supports engineer-to-order high-speed, non-contact metrology solutions and automation systems.

Through the transaction, Sandvik will expand its current metrology offering and take a leading position in inline metrology, including a broader position in high-speed, high-volume, non-contact inspection and assembly automation.

Schivo Acquires Supreme Screw Products

Ireland-based Schivo Medical acquired Supreme Screw Products (SSP), located in Plainview, New York, a supplier of precision machining, laser processing and assembly services for the medical device market, manufacturing components for various surgical applications including orthopedic instruments, spine screws and bone screws. Schivo is a contract manufacturer offering design, development and manufacturing for life science OEMs. Investment bank Kinsella Group advised Schivo on the transaction. SSP will complement Schivo’s existing capabilities for minimally invasive surgery and life science markets.

Spectrum Plastics Acquires Assets of Laser Light Technologies

Spectrum Plastics Group purchased all assets of Laser Light Technologies, a supplier for global customers through the customization of laser processing systems and services. Laser Light Technologies, based in Hermann, Missouri, offers laser manufacturing of high-precision products. Spectrum Plastics manufactures custom and specialty plastic products and components for the medical device industry. The addition of Laser Light Technologies advances Spectrum Plastics’ offerings as a full-service partner for medical devices, life sciences, and other technically challenging applications.

Tyber Medical to Acquire CatapultMD

Tyber Medical purchased all the assets of CatapultMD, based in Bonita Springs, Florida. Once the acquisition is complete, Tyber Medical will own and operate a combined 100,000 square feet of manufacturing space with an expanded machining footprint for manufacturing plates, screws, spinal implants and instrumentation used in orthopedic surgery.

The company aims to fill in gaps in orthopedic companies’ product portfolios by bringing FDA-cleared, MDR-compliant, and CE-approved medical devices to market in less than 12 months.
